If you\u2019re one of them, your medical and daily living expenses may be higher than other families. The good news is there are a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/individuals\/more-information-for-people-with-disabilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tax benefits for people with disabilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-the-irs-define-disabled\"><strong>How does the IRS define disabled?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are considered to be permanently and totally disabled if your mental or physical condition prevents you from being able to work. A physician must certify that your condition is expected to last for a long period (at least 12 months) or can lead to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tax-credit-for-the-elderly-and-disabled\"><strong>Tax credit for the elderly and disabled<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are at least 65 years old and\/or permanently and totally disabled, you may qualify for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/publications\/p524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tax credit for the Elderly or Disabled<\/a>. The credit ranges between $3,750 and $7,500 and is based on your adjusted gross income and Social Security benefits.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Filing Status<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Income Limit (AGI)<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Maximum Disability Income<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>single, head of household, or qualifying surviving spouse<\/td><td>$17,500<\/td><td>$5,000<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>married filing jointly and only one spouse qualifies<\/td><td>$20,000<\/td><td>$5,000<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>married filing jointly and both spouses qualify<\/td><td>$25,000<\/td><td>$7,500<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>married filing separately and you lived apart from your spouse for all of 2023<\/td><td>$12,500<\/td><td>$3,750<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-able-accounts-can-help-you-save-for-disability-related-expenses\"><strong>ABLE Accounts can help you save for disability-related expenses<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between medical bills and other impairment-related expenses, living with a disability can get expensive. To minimize the burden, Congress created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/government-entities\/federal-state-local-governments\/able-accounts-tax-benefit-for-people-with-disabilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) accounts<\/a> to help people with disabilities and their families save for disability-related expenses. These tax-favored accounts are for individuals who became disabled before their 26th birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can contribute up to $17,000 for 2023 and the distributions are tax free as long as they are used for qualified disability expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ablenrc.org\/get-started\/what-can-funds-be-used-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Qualified disability expenses<\/a> are expenses for supplies or services related to supporting the health, independence, or quality of life of the disabled person.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These can include expenses related to&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Housing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transportation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assistive technology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support devices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Healthcare<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IRS or Social Security Administration may monitor an ABLE account to ensure the funds are used towards qualified expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-get-a-higher-standard-deduction-for-blindness\"><strong>You get a higher standard deduction for blindness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taxpayers who are blind can claim a bigger <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/tax-basics-understanding-the-difference-between-standard-and-itemized-deductions\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=disabilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">standard deduction<\/a>, which translates into a larger tax break. You are considered legally blind if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can\u2019t see better than 20\/200 in your best eye with glasses or contact lenses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your field of vision is 20 degrees or less.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For tax year 2023 (taxes filed in 2024), these are the standard deduction amounts for most filers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Single or Married Filing Separately \u2013 $13,850<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Head of Household \u2013 $20,800<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Married Filing Jointly or Qualifying Surviving Spouse \u2013 $27,700<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The additional standard deduction amounts for taxpayers who are 65 and older or blind are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Single or Head of household \u2013 $1,850<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Married taxpayers or Qualifying Surviving Spouse \u2013 $1,500<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-fe48e5de wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-font-size has-medium-font-size\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-white-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eztaxreturn.com\/?utm_dest=site&amp;action=start_return&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=disabilities&amp;gid=disabilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Get Started Now<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-may-be-eligible-for-the-earned-income-tax-credit\"><strong>You may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain disability payments qualify as earned income, even if you didn\u2019t work during the year.&nbsp; For example, disability retirement benefits you receive before you reach retirement age or employer-paid disability insurance benefits. This can help you qualify for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eztaxreturn.com\/resources\/video-eic.html?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=disabilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EITC is a <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/tax-credits-vs-deductions-whats-the-difference\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=disabilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refundable tax credit<\/a> for workers with low to moderate incomes. The credit amount varies based on your filing status, qualifying children and income. To qualify, your earned income and adjusted gross income must fall below the following income limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><td><strong>Children Claimed<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Single, Head of Household<br>or Qualifying Widow(er)<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Married Filing Jointly<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Zero<\/td><td>$17,640<\/td><td>$24,210<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>One<\/td><td>$46,560<\/td><td>$53,120<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Two<\/td><td>$52,918<\/td><td>$59,478<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Three<\/td><td>$56,838<\/td><td>$63,398<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your investment income also cannot exceed $11,000 for the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For tax year 2023, the EITC is worth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$600 without any qualifying children<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$3,995 with one qualifying child<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$6,604 with two qualifying children<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$7,430 with three or more kids<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note, Social Security Disability Insurance, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and military disability pensions do not count as earned income. The maximum expense limit is $3,000 for the care of one qualified person and $6,000 for two or more qualified people. The child and dependent care credit is worth 20 to 35 percent of your expenses depending on your adjusted gross income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-medical-expenses-are-deductible\"><strong>Medical expenses are deductible<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another important tax tip for people with disabilities is that you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/taxtopics\/tc502#:~:text=If%20you%20itemize%20your%20deductions,gross%20income%20for%20the%20year.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deduct any medical expenses<\/a> that exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income if you itemize.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following medical aids along with any maintenance fees qualify:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hearing aids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eyeglasses\/contacts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Artificial limbs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wheelchairs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Service animals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Special phone equipment for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Qualified long-term care insurance premiums (within certain limits)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, you can deduct the cost of home improvements made to improve your home\u2019s accessibility, such as ramps, widened doorways, and even new door knobs. If you need the help of impairment-related services to do your job, you can deduct the cost on your federal tax return.
