That\u2019s 1 in 5 people providing care in addition to working outside the household in the US\u2013up from 1 in 7 in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caregiving can significantly impact people\u2019s finances, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2024\/01\/31\/caregivers-congress-tax-credit-for-caring-act\/72408400007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">78% of caregivers incurring out-of-pocket expenses<\/a>. In fact, the average caregiver in the U.S. spent $7,242 in out-of-pocket costs in 2021, according to the AARP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luckily, there are tax credits, deductions, and other strategies caregivers can use to help ease the financial burden come tax season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use these tax tips for caregivers to lower your tax bill this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-claim-tax-credits-for-caregiving\"><strong>Claim tax credits for caregiving<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a caregiver, you may be able to claim certain <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/tax-credits-vs-deductions-whats-the-difference\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=familycaregivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tax credits or deductions<\/a> on your tax return:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tax Credit for Other Dependents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s how they work:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-child-and-dependent-care-tax-credit\"><strong>Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/pay-for-childcare-you-can-get-up-to-8000-back-on-your-tax-return\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=familycaregivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Child and Dependent Care tax credit<\/a> partially reimburses you for the cost of caring for a family member while you (or your spouse, if filing jointly) worked. The credit amount depends on your <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/what-is-adjusted-gross-income-agi\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=familycaregivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adjusted gross inc<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/what-is-adjusted-gross-income-agi\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=familycaregivers\">ome<\/a> and is a percentage of the work-related expenses you paid to a care provider. You can claim up to $3,000 of caregiving costs for one person, or $6,000 of caregiving costs for two people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To qualify, you must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/p503.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meet the following requirements<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The individual must qualify as a dependent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The individual must be unable to physically or mentally care for themselves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The individual must have lived with you for at least six months of the year you are filing taxes for<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You (and your spouse, if filing jointly), must have earned income in the tax year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You paid caregiving expenses to enable you (or your spouse) to work or look for work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you qualify, you don\u2019t have to itemize your deductions to claim the Child and Dependent Care tax credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Read more: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/pay-for-childcare-you-can-get-up-to-8000-back-on-your-tax-return\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=familycaregivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Can You Claim the Child and Dependent Care Credit?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tax-credit-for-other-dependents\"><strong>Tax Credit for Other Dependents<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taxpayers with dependents who don\u2019t qualify for the Child Tax Credit, may be able to claim the <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/taxpayers-who-arent-eligible-for-the-child-tax-credit-should-look-into-the-credit-for-other-dependents\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=familycaregivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tax Credit for Other Dependents<\/a>. This allows you to claim up to $500 as a nonrefundable credit for each qualifying dependent. The credit begins to phase out when your income hits $200,000 (single) or $400,000 (married, filing jointly).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To qualify, you must meet the following requirements:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your dependent is a child over age 17 or a parent or relative supported by you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The dependent is a U.S. citizen, national, or resident alien<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The dependent has less than $4,700 gross income this year&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You provided more than half of their support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The dependent lived with you for the entire year or are related to you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The dependent is not filing a joint return with their spouse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-fe48e5de wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-font-size has-medium-font-size\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-white-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eztaxreturn.com\/?utm_dest=site&amp;action=start_return&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=familycaregivers&amp;gid=familycaregivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Get Started Now<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-deduct-qualifying-medical-expenses\"><strong>Deduct qualifying medical expenses<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you pay out of pocket for caregiving costs, you may be able to deduct some of those expenses on your tax bill. To deduct these expenses, you will have to itemize your return. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/tax-deductions-medical-dental-expenses\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=familycaregivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deduct any qualified, unreimbursed medical expenses<\/a> that are over 7.5% of your 2023 adjusted gross income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if your AGI is $50,000, you can deduct any qualifying medical costs over $3,750.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/publications\/p502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Qualifying expenses<\/a> include:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Payments to doctors, surgeons, dentists, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nursing assistance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prescription costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Qualified long-term care services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hospital care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transportation costs to and from medical appointments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nursing home care<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can only deduct expenses paid for during that tax year. You cannot deduct any expenses that were reimbursed (for example, any costs covered by insurance).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-take-advantage-of-health-savings-accounts-and-flexible-spending-accounts\"><strong>Take advantage of Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tax credits and deductions are not the only way to be tax-savvy with your caregiving finances. You can also use tax-advantaged accounts to pay for medical-related expenses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-health-savings-accounts-hsa\"><strong>Health Savings Accounts (HSA)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Health Savings Account, or HSA, is a tax-advantaged savings account that lets you deposit earnings pre-tax. You can then use the untaxed funds in your HSA account to pay for qualified medical expenses, including deductibles, copays, treatments, and more\u2014thus reducing your out-of-pocket costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can only contribute to an HSA if you have a high-deductible health insurance plan. And you cannot deduct any of the medical expenses you pay for with HSA funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-flexible-spending-accounts-fsa\"><strong>Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flexible Spending Accounts are employer-sponsored accounts you may receive as part of your benefits package. FSAs allow you to set aside money from your paycheck pre-tax to spend on qualified medical and dependent care costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three different types of FSAs:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Limited Expense Health Care Account FSA (LEX HCFSA)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For eligible dental and vision expenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Max contribution: $3,200<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Healthcare FSA (HCFSA)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For eligible medical costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Max contribution: $3,200<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dependent Care FSA (DCFSA)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For any child or adult dependent care expenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Max contribution: $5,000 per household or $2,500 if married but filing separately<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that FSAs are use-it or lose-it accounts. This means any contributions you don\u2019t spend from your FSA will be forfeit at the end of the year.
