Tax season can be intimidating, but we\u2019re here to walk you through it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below we break down what you need to know to file taxes as a student and give you pro tax tips for students that you can use to get the biggest refund you qualify for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-college-students-need-to-file-taxes\"><strong>Do college students need to file taxes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first thing you need to determine is whether you are required to file taxes at all. The answer to this is: it depends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your tax liability is based on your income. However, even if you don\u2019t have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/help\/ita\/do-i-need-to-file-a-tax-return\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">file a tax return<\/a>, you may want to anyway if you\u2019re eligible for a refund.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may get money back when you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/individuals\/students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">file taxes as a student<\/a> if<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You qualify for a refundable tax credit&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your employer withheld more taxes than you owe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-needs-to-file-taxes\"><strong>Who needs to file taxes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will need to file taxes as a student (single, dependent) for 2023 if&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your unearned income was more than $1,250.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your earned income was more than $13,850.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your gross income was more than the larger of:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$1,250, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your earned income (up to $13,450) plus $400.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Earned income:<\/strong> Earned income includes salaries, wages, tips, professional fees, and taxable scholarship and fellowship grants.&nbsp;<br><strong>Gross income:<\/strong> Gross income is the total of your unearned and earned income.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your parents or guardians do not claim you as a dependent on their tax returns, you will still need to file taxes as a student (single) if your gross income was $13,850 in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are a married student under age 65 filing jointly, you will need to file a return if your gross income was more than $27,700. If you are filing separately, you each need to have earned at least $5 in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-fe48e5de wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-font-size has-medium-font-size\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-white-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eztaxreturn.com\/?utm_dest=site&amp;action=start_return&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=studenttips&amp;gid=studenttips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Get Started Now<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-are-you-a-dependent\"><strong>Are you a dependent?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generally, parents can <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/who-can-i-claim-as-a-dependent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claim you as a dependent<\/a> until you are 19 or, if you are a full-time student, until you are 24 years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/tax-credits-vs-deductions-whats-the-difference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tax credits and deductions<\/a> available to students for education-related expenses (see below). However, if your parents claim you as a dependent, you may not be eligible to claim those tax breaks for yourself. (Your parents may be able to though!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re paying for your own schooling, talk to your parents before you file to determine your dependency status and make a plan for how you want to file.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tax-credits-for-students\"><strong>Tax credits for students<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/education-credits-that-can-lower-your-tax-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tax credits specifically for students<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>American Opportunity Tax Credit:<\/strong> This is a partially refundable tax credit worth up to $2,500 for students (or parents) who paid for tuition, books and other related expenses. You can only claim this credit during the first four years of college. If the credit reduces your tax bill to zero, you can receive 40% of the remaining credit refunded to you (up to $1,000).<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lifetime Learning Credit:<\/strong> This credit is worth up to $2,000 for students who paid for tuition and other related expenses at a qualified institution. You are not required to be pursuing a degree to claim the credit. There is no limit to the number of years you can claim this credit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind, you cannot claim these tax credits if your parents list you as their dependent. This means they won\u2019t count as taxable income on your tax return\u2013lowering your potential tax liability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, if you have student loans, you can deduct your interest payments on your return for up to $2,500. (Just make sure you aren\u2019t claimed as a dependent, or you won\u2019t be able to take advantage of this deduction on your own return).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/how-does-fafsa-affect-my-taxes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">>>Learn more about how financial aid affects your taxes.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-tax-forms-do-students-need\"><strong>What tax forms do students need?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a few tax forms you may need when you file taxes as a student:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tax Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return<\/strong>: This is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-1040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">standard tax return form<\/a> most taxpayers use to file taxes. If you made student loan payments or wish to claim any education credits, you\u2019ll also need to attach forms Schedule 1 and Schedule 3 when you file.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Form 8863, Education Credits: <\/strong>Use this form to calculate and claim your education credits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Form 1098-E, Student Loan Interest Statement:<\/strong> If you paid interest on student loans, your loan servicer will complete this form and send it to you to include with your tax return when you file.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement: <\/strong>This form reports your tuition payments to the IRS.
