If the name on your tax return doesn\u2019t match SSA records, <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/nine-common-filing-errors-avoid\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=namechange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the IRS will flag it as an error<\/a>, and that may delay your refund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-you-need-to-update-your-name\"><strong>When You Need to Update Your Name<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you have married and you\u2019re using your new spouse\u2019s last name, or you\u2019ve hyphenated your last name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you were divorced and are now using your former last name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you adopted your new spouse\u2019s children and their names changed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basically, any time you or a dependent has a legal name change, you will need to update the SSA for your tax records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-change-your-name\"><strong>How to Change Your Name<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you and\/or a dependent\u2019s name has changed, notify the SSA as soon as possible. The SSA will issue you a new social security card. That way, the IRS can match your new name with your SSN.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To change your name, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/forms\/ss-5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">file Form SS-5<\/a>. You can also get Form SS-5 on the SSA\u2019s website at www.ssa.gov, by calling 800-772-1213, or at local SSA offices. Your new card will have the same number as your former card but will show your new name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will need to mail your application or deliver it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/locator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">your nearest SSA office<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What you will need:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proof of identity (e.g., valid driver\u2019s license)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof of citizenship status (e.g., birth certificate)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof of legal name change (e.g., marriage license, divorce decree, or court order)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SSA will notify the IRS of the name change for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-re-newly-married-but-haven-t-changed-your-name-yet\"><strong>If You\u2019re Newly Married but Haven\u2019t Changed Your Name Yet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if you are socially going by your new married name, if you haven\u2019t legally changed your name after the wedding, you still need to file your taxes using the name on your social security card. You and your spouse can still file jointly\u2013your last names don\u2019t have to match. But both of your names should match your respective names attached to your SSNs. For adopted children without SSNs, parents can apply for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/individuals\/adoption-taxpayer-identification-number\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number<\/a> by filing Form W-7A, Application for Taxpayer Identification Number for Pending U.S. Adoptions, with the IRS. The ATIN is a temporary number used in place of an SSN on the tax return.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-w-7-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Form W-7A<\/a> is available on the IRS.gov website or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-long-to-wait-to-file-your-taxes-after-a-name-change\"><strong>How Long to Wait to File Your Taxes After a Name Change<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should receive your new social security card within two weeks of the SSA receiving your application. It is best to wait another 1-2 weeks after your card arrives before filing taxes to ensure all records have been updated in time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on when you change your name, you may not have enough time to change your name with the SSA before the tax filing deadline. We recommend calling your local SSA office to check on processing times to ensure you have enough time to file. If you don\u2019t have time to update your records before tax day, file under the name listed on your social security card. You can finalize your name change with the SSA and IRS after that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-make-sure-your-irs-forms-are-also-updated\"><strong>Make Sure Your IRS Forms Are Also Updated<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After you change your name with the SSA, notify your employer (or clients, if you are self-employed), to ensure your <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/2023-beginners-guide-to-common-irs-forms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IRS Form W-2 or Form 1099s<\/a> correctly reflect your new name.
