Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-federal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Federal<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/taxtopics\/tc551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">standard deduction<\/a> has increased &#8211; for married filing jointly taxpayers (and qualifying surviving spouse), it is $25,900 for the 2022 tax year. For single filers (and married filing separately) it&#8217;s $12,950. For taxpayers filing as head of household it\u2019s $19,400.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The Additional CTC has gone up, it is now a maximum of $1,500 per child (was $1,400).<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The Standard Mileage Rate has increased, and there are two separate rates for 2022.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The Federal Educator Expenses deduction limit increased to $300 ($600 for joint filers). Was previously $250 ($500).<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Child Tax Credit has changed &#8211; The age for qualifying children is back to being under 17 (was under 18 for Tax Year 2021).\u00a0 The refundable portion of the Child Tax Credit has expired. Once again, only the Additional Child Tax Credit is refundable.\u00a0 The maximum CTC is back to being $2,000 per child (was $3,600\/$3,000).<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/credits-deductions\/individuals\/earned-income-tax-credit-eitc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earned Income Credit<\/a> has changed &#8211; If you don\u2019t have a qualifying child, you need to be between the ages of 25 and 65 to claim EIC. The maximum credit for taxpayers with no qualifying child has gone down.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The credit for child and dependent care expenses has changed &#8211; The credit is back to being fully nonrefundable. The maximum qualifying expenses amount has gone back to being $3,000 for one qualifying person and $6,000 for two or more qualifying persons (was $8,000 and $16,000). The maximum credit percentage has gone back to 35% (was 50%).<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The recovery rebate credit has expired. \u00a0You can no longer claim the recovery rebate credit on your taxes if you didn\u2019t receive the full third Economic Impact Payment (stimulus).<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>For tax year 2022, charitable contribution deduction is no longer allowed if a taxpayer takes the standard deduction.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The deadline for filing your 2022 tax return is April 18, 2023.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Qualifying widower is now called qualifying surviving spouse.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-fe48e5de wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-font-size is-style-fill has-medium-font-size\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-white-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eztaxreturn.com\/ezrouter.html?action=start_return&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=whatsnew&amp;gid=whatsnew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Get Started Now<\/a><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-states\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>States<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-arkansas\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the new tax laws in Arkansas?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Arkansas has a new\u00a0Additional Tax Credit for Qualified Individuals worth up to $60.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>There\u2019s a new\u00a0Inflationary Relief Income Tax Credit worth up to $150 ($300 for joint filers).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-arkansas\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the new tax laws in <\/strong><strong>California?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>The Foster Youth Tax Credit is worth up to $1,083 for former foster youth.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-colorado\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the new tax laws in Colorado?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Colorado has a new Child Tax Credit.\u00a0 The credit amount is based on the federal Child Tax Credit\/Additional Child Tax Credit.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>There\u2019s a new Early Childhood Educator Income Tax Credit\u00a0worth up to $1,500.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The Colorado Income Qualified Senior Housing Credit\u00a0is worth up to $1,000.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"JlqpRe wp-block-heading\"><strong><span class=\"JCzEY ZwRhJd\"><span class=\"CSkcDe\">What are the new tax laws in Georgia?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Georgia has a NEW\u00a0Exemption for Unborn Children with a detectable Heartbeat.\u00a0 It\u2019s a $3,000 deduction per unborn child.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Georgia has a NEW military retirement exclusion.\u00a0 It\u2019s an exclusion of up to $17,500 of military income (up to $35,000 if they have earned income of more than $17,500).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-maryland\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the new tax laws in Maryland?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>New Senior Tax Credit\u00a0&#8211; A nonrefundable tax credit is equal to (1) $1,000 for an individual or if only one of the individuals filing a joint return is an eligible individual; and (2) $1,750 if married filing jointly and both individuals are at least age 65 and (3) $1,750 for surviving\u00a0spouse and head of household.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>New senior taxable income subtraction\u00a0&#8211; A reduction of taxable income up to $100,000.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Retired Forest\/Park\/Wildlife Ranger\u00a0&#8211; Pension exclusion up to $15,000 of pension and retirement annuity income, limited by $34,300 social security income.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Public safety employee\u00a0&#8211; Retired Correctional Officer, Law Enforcement Officer, or Fire, Rescue, or Emergency Services Personnel (renamed as <strong>public safety employee<\/strong>) Pension Exclusion\u00a0<strong>no longer limited by $34,300 Social security income<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the new tax laws in Massachusetts?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Moving Expenses now only allowed for Members of Armed Forces<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The Qualified Unemployment Deduction has been removed\/discontinued<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-michigan\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the new tax laws in Michigan?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Michigan has a new First-Time Homebuyer Savings Program deduction (Form 5792).\u00a0 MI taxpayers can deduct up to $5,000 ($10,00 for MFJ) plus interest for contributions made to a first-time home buyer savings account.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-new-jersey\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the new tax laws in New Jersey?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>NJ Child Tax Credit\u00a0(New) &#8211; A refundable NJ Child Tax Credit for any dependents under the age of 6 (born in 2017 or later). Credit amount is up to $500 per qualifying child, depending on NJ taxable income amount.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>NJ EIC\u00a0&#8211; NJ is continuing to allow a NJ EIC $224 (was $601 last year) for those age 18 and older who did not qualify for fed EIC only because of age.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>New deduction\u00a0&#8211; Taxpayers get a deduction of up to $10,000 for contributions made to a NJBEST (NJ Better Educational Savings Trust) account.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>New deduction\u00a0&#8211; Taxpayers get a deduction of up to $2,500 for principal and interest paid during the year on an NJCLASS (NJ College Loans to Assist State Students) loan.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>New deduction\u00a0&#8211; Taxpayers get a deduction of up to $10,000 for tuition costs paid to a NJ institution of higher learning.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the new tax laws in New York?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>New subtraction &#8211; Student Loan Forgiveness Awards &#8211; If you received a student loan forgiveness award from New York State, you may exclude the amount of the award from your New York taxable income to the extent that it was included in your federal adjusted gross income. The award must have been received from the state of New York to be eligible for the subtraction. This includes awards made under Article 14 of New York State Education Law.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>New subtraction &#8211; Health Care and Mental Hygiene Worker Bonus &#8211; The Health Care and Mental Hygiene Worker Bonus Program is a New York State program that provides a bonus of up to $3,000 to qualified health care employees working for a qualified employer during specific time periods.
