Because federal taxes are pay-as-you-go, it\u2019s important for taxpayers to withhold enough from their paychecks or pay enough in estimated tax. If they don\u2019t, they risk being charged a penalty.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Adjust tax withholding<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For employees, withholding is the amount of federal income tax withheld from their paycheck. The amount of income tax an employer withholds from an employee\u2019s regular pay depends on two things:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>The amount they earn.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The information they give their employer on Form W\u20134.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All taxpayers should review their federal withholding each year to make sure they&#8217;re not having too little or too much tax withheld.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individuals can use the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/individuals\/tax-withholding-estimator\">IRS Tax Withholding Estimator<\/a>\u00a0to help decide if they should make a change to their withholding. This online tool guides users, step-by-step, through the process of checking their withholding, and provides withholding recommendations to help aim for their desired refund amount when they file next year.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taxpayers can check with their employer to update their withholding or submit a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-w-4\">Form W-4, Employee&#8217;s Withholding Certificate<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-button aligncenter\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-luminous-vivid-orange-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eztaxreturn.com\/offers_plan.html?offer_tax_year=2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pre-register Now!<\/a><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Make estimated payments<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taxpayers may need to make quarterly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/businesses\/small-businesses-self-employed\/estimated-taxes\">estimated tax payments<\/a> in a few situations:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>If the amount of income tax withheld from a taxpayer&#8217;s salary or pension isn\u2019t enough.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>If they receive income such as interest, dividends, alimony, self-employment income, capital gains, prizes and awards.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>If they are self-employed.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Estimated tax payments are due from individual taxpayers on April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 17. The fastest and easiest way to make estimated tax payments is using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/direct-pay\">Direct Pay<\/a>\u00a0or the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/eftps-the-electronic-federal-tax-payment-system\">Electronic Federal Tax Payment System<\/a>.
