Tips can be taxable income, but it&#8217;s important for people working in these areas to understand important details involving tips.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are tips?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tips are optional cash or noncash payments that customers make to employees.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Cash tips include: those received directly from customers, electronically paid tips distributed to the employee by their employer and tips received from other employees under any tip-sharing arrangement. All cash tips must be reported to the employer.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Noncash tips are those of value received in any other medium than cash, such as: tickets, passes or other goods or commodities that a customer gives the employee. Noncash tips aren&#8217;t reported to the employer.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four factors determine whether a payment qualifies as a tip. Normally, all four must apply<strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>The customer makes the payment free from compulsion;<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The customer must have the unrestricted right to determine the amount;<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The payment should not be the subject of negotiations or dictated by employer policy; and<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Generally, the customer has the right to determine who receives the payment.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Direct and indirect tips<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A direct tip occurs when an employee receives it directly from a customer, even if it is part of a tip pool. Examples of directly-tipped employees include waiters, waitresses, bartenders and hairstylists.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An indirect tip occurs when an employee, who normally does not receive tips directly from customers, receives a tip. Examples of indirectly-tipped employees include bussers, service bartenders, cooks and salon shampooers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Keeping a daily tip record<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employees must keep a daily record of the cash tips they receive. They can use <strong>Form 4070A, Employee&#8217;s Daily Record of Tips<\/strong>, which is included in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-publication-1244\">Publication 1244, Employee&#8217;s Daily Record of Tips and Report of Tips to Employer<\/a>, to keep daily track of the cash tips they receive.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They should also keep a record of the date and value of any noncash tips, such as tickets, passes or other items of value. Although they don&#8217;t report noncash tips to their employer, they must report them on their tax return.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-button aligncenter\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-luminous-vivid-orange-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eztaxreturn.com\/offers_plan.html?offer_tax_year=2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pre-register Now!<\/a><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting tips to employer<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no required form, but the statement must include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Employee signature;<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Employee&#8217;s name, address and social security number;<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Employer&#8217;s name and address (establishment name if different);<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Month or period the report covers; and<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Total of tips received during the month or period.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employees must report tips to the employer by the 10th of the month following the month the tips were received.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The employee can use <strong>Form 4070, Employee&#8217;s Report of Tips to Employer<\/strong>, available in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-publication-1244\">Publication 1244<\/a>, an employer-provided form or other electronic system used by their employer as long as it includes the above elements required for reporting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employees don&#8217;t have to report tip amounts of less than $20 per month per employer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reporting tips on individual income tax return<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tips reported to the employer by the employee are included on the employee&#8217;s Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, for reporting on an individual tax return.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any tips that the employee didn&#8217;t report to the employer must be reported separately on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-4137\">Form 4137, Social Security and Medicare Tax on Unreported Tip Income<\/a>, to include as additional wages with their\u00a0tax return.
