{"id":29351,"date":"2022-07-29T14:15:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-29T18:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.eztaxreturn.com\/?p=29351"},"modified":"2023-06-05T12:45:47","modified_gmt":"2023-06-05T17:45:47","slug":"minimum-wages-are-going-up-across-the-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/minimum-wages-are-going-up-across-the-country\/","title":{"rendered":"Minimum Wages Are Going Up Across the Country"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/reports\/minimum-wage\/2020\/home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>, 1.1 million employees were paid at or below the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minimum_wage_in_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">federal minimum wage<\/a> in 2021.\u00a0 This represents 1.4% of all hourly paid workers, most of whom are between the ages of 16 and 25.\u00a0 The federal minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 per hour since 2009.\u00a0 To keep up with the rising <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cost_of_living\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cost of living<\/a>, many states and localities have been raising their own minimum wage.\u00a0 The most recent increase took effect on July 1<sup>st<\/sup> and more wage hikes are scheduled for the future.\u00a0 Here are states and localities that are paying more money.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-california\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>California<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standard minimum wage jumped to $15 per hour on January 1<sup>st<\/sup> in California.\u00a0 However, small business with 25 employees or less can still pay their workers $14 per hour for now.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gavin_Newsom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gov. Newsom<\/a> recently announced that all employers will begin paying a minimum wage of $15.50 per hour starting January 2023.\u00a0 As of July 1<sup>st<\/sup>, several cities have already started paying a higher minimum wage.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Alameda &#8211; $15.75<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Berkeley &#8211; $16.99<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Emeryville &#8211; $17.68<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Fremont &#8211; $16.00<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Los Angeles &#8211; $16.04<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Los Angeles County &#8211; $15.96<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Malibu &#8211; $15.96<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Milpitas &#8211; $16.40<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Pasadena &#8211; $16.11<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>San Francisco &#8211; $16.99<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Santa Monica &#8211; $15.96<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 id=\"h-connecticut\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Connecticut<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those working in Connecticut will be happy to hear that the minimum wage has jumped from $13 to $14 per hour.\u00a0 As the final step in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ned_Lamont\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gov. Lamont\u2019s<\/a> five-year plan, workers will receive another pay bump on June 1, 2023, when the minimum wage becomes $15 per hour.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 id=\"h-illinois\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Illinois<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, the Illinois statewide minimum wage rose from $11 to $12 per hour for most workers.\u00a0 If you\u2019re age 17 or younger and work less than 650 hours during the year, the minimum wage is $9.25 per hour.\u00a0 Chicago and Cook County have their own rules for how much workers will be paid.\u00a0 Effective July 1<sup>st<\/sup>, Chicago businesses with 21 or more employees must pay at least $15.40 per hour which is up from $15.\u00a0 Companies with 20 employees or less must pay at least $14.50 per hour.\u00a0 In Cook County, the minimum hourly wage has increased from $13.00 to $13.35 per hour.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-button aligncenter\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-luminous-vivid-orange-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eztaxreturn.com\/offers_plan.html?offer_tax_year=2022\">Pre-register Now!<\/a><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 id=\"h-maryland\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Maryland<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the beginning of July, companies in Montgomery County, MD with 51 or more employees were required to increase wages from $15.00 to $15.65 per hour.\u00a0 Businesses with 11 to 50 employees must now pay at least $14.50 per hour.\u00a0 For small businesses with 10 employees or less, the hourly minimum wage is $14.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 id=\"h-minnesota\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Minnesota<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">St. Paul and Minneapolis both hiked their hourly minimum wage on July 1<sup>st<\/sup>.\u00a0 In St. Paul:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Large businesses with 101-10,000 employees must now pay $13.50 per hour.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Small businesses with 6-100 employees are required to pay at least $12 per hour.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Micro businesses with 5 employees or less must pay a minimum wage of $10.75 per hour.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minneapolis has increased its minimum wage to $13.50 per hour for small businesses with less than 100 employees and $15 per hour for larger companies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 id=\"h-nevada\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nevada<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Nevada, the minimum wage is determined by whether your employer offers medical coverage.\u00a0 Employers who do not provide <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Health_insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health insurance benefits<\/a> are required to pay at least $10.50 per hour.\u00a0 If they do provide coverage, they can pay you $1 less than the specified minimum wage.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 id=\"h-oregon\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Oregon<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents in the Beaver state will now earn more money, but how much of a raise you\u2019ll receive depends on where you work.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>In standard counties, the minimum wage is $13.50.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>If you work in the Portland Urbans Growth Boundary, you must be paid at least $14.75 per hour.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The minimum wage has increased from $12.00 to $12.50 per hour in non-urban counties.\u00a0 This includes Baker, Coos, Crook, Curry, Douglas, Gilliam, Grant, Harney, Jefferson, Klamath, Lake, Malheur, Morrow, Sherman, Umatilla, Union, Wallowa, and Wheeler counties.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 id=\"h-washington-d-c\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Washington, D.C.<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last but not least, workers in Washington, D.C. must be paid at least $16.10 per hour which is up from $15.20.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<h2 id=\"h-future-minimum-wage-increases\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Future minimum wage
