you\u2019re planning a trip in the coming months, you probably know to budget for hotel, airfare, activities, and food; but there are some other expenses that can catch you by surprise.\u00a0 Here are some hidden travel fees that can trip you up.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-checked-baggage-fees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Checked baggage fees<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only domestic airline that offers free checked bags for all passengers is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Southwest<\/a>.\u00a0 Everyone else charges a checked bag fee and in some cases, you may have to pay for a carry-on.\u00a0 American Airlines and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delta.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Delta<\/a> both charge $30 for your first checked bag.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jetblue.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JetBlue\u2019s<\/a> checked bag fee is slightly higher.\u00a0 They charge $35 for your first checked bag.\u00a0 The fee applies to each leg of your trip and can quickly add up when traveling as a group.\u00a0 For instance, a family of 4 each carrying their own suitcase on Delta would have to pay $240 in checked bag fees round-trip.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-overweight-baggage-fees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Overweight baggage fees<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people tend to overpack for trips and airlines capitalize on it.\u00a0 If your luggage weighs more than 50 pounds, airlines will charge you an overweight baggage fee.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how much you can expect to pay with some of the popular airlines.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>American Airlines \u2013 $100 for bags weighing 51-70 lbs., $200 for bags weighing 71-100 lbs.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Delta \u2013 $100 for bags weighing 51-70 lbs., $200 for bags weighing 71-100 lbs.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>JetBlue \u2013 $150 for bags weighing 51-99 lbs.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spirit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spirit<\/a> &#8211; $50 for bags weighing 41-50 lbs., $75 for bags weighing 51-100 lbs.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Southwest &#8211; $75 for bags weighing more than 50 lbs.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before heading to the airport, weigh your suitcase on a bathroom scale.\u00a0 If it\u2019s overweight, remove some things you don\u2019t need.\u00a0 Avoid overpacking by using a small suitcase, planning your outfits in advance, carrying multipurpose shoes, and packing travel-size toiletries.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Airfare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">airfare<\/a> is that you\u2019re randomly assigned a seat at check-in.\u00a0 Odds are you\u2019ll either be stuck in a middle seat which no one wants or separated from your travel buddies.\u00a0 If you want to pick specific seats, you\u2019ll need to pay extra for seat selection.\u00a0 JetBlue customers who booked Blue Basic fares must pay between $5-$40 each way to select their seats more than 24 hours before departure.\u00a0 Requesting a regular seat on a Spirit flight can cost you between $1-$50 per seat.\u00a0 Those who prefer Big Front Seats will need to pay $12-$250 per seat.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-boarding-pass-printing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Boarding pass printing<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Believe it or not, some airlines actually charge a fee for printing your boarding pass.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allegiantair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Allegiant Air<\/a> charges $5 for each boarding pass printed by an airport agent.\u00a0 Meanwhile, Spirit charges $2 per boarding pass printed at the airport kiosk and $10 per ticket printed by an airport agent.\u00a0 There are two ways to avoid the fee, you can check-in online and print your boarding pass at home or you can download a mobile boarding pass using the airline\u2019s app.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-passport-fees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Passport fees<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you plan to travel abroad, you\u2019re going to need a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Passport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passport<\/a> and it\u2019s not free.\u00a0 Adults (16 or older) who are first time applicants must pay two fees \u2013 an application fee and an acceptance fee.\u00a0 For a passport book, the application fee is $130, and the acceptance fee is $35.\u00a0 If you\u2019re looking to renew your passport book, it\u2019s $130.\u00a0 Parents applying for their child\u2019s passport must pay a $100 application fee plus a $35 acceptance fee.\u00a0 Keep in mind, child applicants must apply in person.\u00a0 It usually takes 8-11 weeks for your passport to be processed.\u00a0 For an additional $60, you can get your passport expedited which will cut the waiting time down to 5-7 weeks.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-travel-insurance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Travel insurance<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter how much planning you do, there\u2019s always a possibility that unforeseeable events will ruin your travel plans.\u00a0 That\u2019s when having <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Travel_insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">travel insurance<\/a> comes in handy.\u00a0 It will protect you from losing your money if you need to cancel your trip at the last minute.\u00a0 It can also help you if your flight gets cancelled, you get injured while you\u2019re away or the airline loses your luggage.\u00a0 Travel insurance generally costs 4-10% of your total trip.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-transportation-to-and-from-your-hotel\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transportation to and from your hotel<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you arrive at your destination, you\u2019re going to need a way to get to get around.\u00a0 Some cities have reliable <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public_transport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public transportation<\/a>, while others do not.
