noopener\">credit card<\/a> declined in public can be incredibly embarrassing, especially if you don\u2019t have a backup card handy.\u00a0 It feels like all eyes are on you and you can\u2019t get away fast enough.\u00a0 If your card is declined, the best thing to do is call the issuer immediately to find out why.\u00a0 Here are several common reasons why your card purchase may not \u00a0get approved.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-you-ve-reached-your-credit-limit\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You\u2019ve reached your credit limit<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most every credit card has a specific limit you can spend.\u00a0 Usually when you\u2019re new to credit or have a poor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Credit_score\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">credit score<\/a>, they\u2019ll give you a low limit like $500 or less.\u00a0 Once you\u2019ve maxed out your card, it will be declined for purchases until you make a payment.\u00a0 The easiest way to check your available credit is to log into your online account or call the customer service number on the back of your card.\u00a0 Ideally, to maintain a high credit score, you\u2019ll want to keep your credit utilization under 30% of your credit line.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-your-account-was-flagged-for-fraud\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Your account was flagged for fraud<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you try to make an unusually large purchase or use your card in a foreign location, your account may be flagged for suspicious activity.\u00a0 When that happens, the transaction will be declined and your credit card company will immediately call or text asking if you tried to make a purchase at XYZ.\u00a0 Once they confirm it\u2019s a legitimate transaction, they\u2019ll remove the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Credit_freeze\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">freeze<\/a> and you\u2019ll be able to use your card again.\u00a0 To avoid the hassle, it\u2019s a good idea to notify your bank about your travel plans and large purchases in advance.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-you-entered-incorrect-payment-information\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You entered incorrect payment information<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that it\u2019s almost the holidays, many stores are offering daily deals online and you have to act fast if you want to nab your item before it\u2019s sold out.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to make mistakes when you\u2019re rushing through checkout.\u00a0 If your <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Payment_card_number\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">credit card number<\/a>, expiration date, security code or billing address doesn\u2019t match what\u2019s on file, the payment won\u2019t go through.\u00a0 So, always double check your entries before hitting \u201csubmit\u201d.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-the-card-has-expired\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The card has expired<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trying to use an expired credit card is a surefire way to get your transaction declined.\u00a0 Most credit card companies will automatically send you a new card a few weeks or months before your current one expires.\u00a0 The credit card number will generally remain the same, but the expiration date will be different.\u00a0 You\u2019ll need to activate the card before you can begin using it.\u00a0 Usually, there will be a sticker on the card telling you to go to a specific website or call a toll-free number to activate it.\u00a0 Once you\u2019re done, you can shred your old card.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-there-s-a-large-hold-on-your-card\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>There\u2019s a large hold on your card<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you have a low <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Credit_limit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">credit limit<\/a>, large holds or pending transactions can really put you in a bind because that\u2019s less money you have available to spend.\u00a0 Until those transactions clear, you may have a hard time making additional purchases.\u00a0 Hotels and rental car companies will commonly place a hold on your card to cover potential charges and damages.\u00a0 The hold amount will vary by hotel, but it generally ranges from $50 &#8211; $200 and lasts the duration of your stay.\u00a0 Once you check out of your hotel or return the rented vehicle, the hold will disappear within a few days.\u00a0 In the
