have been out of work since the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/COVID-19_pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pandemic<\/a> began.\u00a0 Self-employed workers and independent contractors don\u2019t qualify for traditional unemployment benefits, but they may be eligible to receive support under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/pandemic-unemployment-assistance-pua-definition-4802064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pandemic Unemployment Assistance<\/a> (PUA) program.\u00a0 If you qualify, you can receive additional payments of $300 per week until September 5, 2021.\u00a0 This is on top of whatever your state gives you.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Workers who earned money through a W-2 job and self-employment income may also be eligible for the Mixed Earner Unemployment Compensation (MEUC) benefit.\u00a0 Eligible workers will receive an additional $100 per week until September.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what you need to know about coronavirus unemployment benefits.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-how-to-qualify-for-the-pua-program\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to qualify for the PUA program<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can receive unemployment benefits if you\u2019re unable to work due to the pandemic.\u00a0 This includes people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or taking care of someone else who has it.\u00a0 You can also qualify if any of the following applies to you:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>You\u2019re self-employed (includes independent contractors and gig workers).<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>You can\u2019t work because your child\u2019s school closed, and you need to take care of them.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>You got a job offer, but it fell through or you can\u2019t get there due to the pandemic.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>You quit your job due to COVID-19.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>You don\u2019t qualify for regular or extended unemployment benefits and were affected by COVID-19.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019re not eligible for benefits if you can work from home or you\u2019re getting paid leave.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-who-is-eligible-for-the-meuc-benefit\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who is eligible for the MEUC benefit<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You qualify for the extra $100 a week benefit if you collect traditional unemployment insurance and earned at least $5,000 in self-employment income.\u00a0 You\u2019re not eligible if you\u2019re receiving PUA benefits.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-how-to-apply-for-unemployment-insurance-benefits\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to apply for unemployment insurance benefits<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll need to contact your state\u2019s unemployment insurance office online or by phone to apply for benefits.\u00a0 Make sure you have the following information handy when you file your claim:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Your Social Security number and driver\u2019s license number<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Your mailing address and phone number<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Names and addresses of all your employers for the last 18 months<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Your start and end dates<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>You\u2019ll also need your bank account and routing numbers if you want direct deposit<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Missing or incorrect information can delay your payments.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-horizontal is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-7d812b4c wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link new $10,200 unemployment tax break<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normally when you receive unemployment benefits, the full amount is considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eztaxreturn.com\/contact-and-support\/tax-terms.html#taxyear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">taxable income<\/a>.\u00a0 This can result in a large tax bill.\u00a0 One of the biggest changes to come from the new relief bill is the new unemployment income exclusion.\u00a0 If your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eztaxreturn.com\/contact-and-support\/tax-terms.html#mileage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">modified adjusted gross income<\/a> is $150,000 or less, you don\u2019t have to pay taxes on up to $10,200 of unemployment compensation.\u00a0 Married couples filing a joint return can exclude up to $20,400 if both spouses were unemployed.\u00a0 Any amounts above the exclusion limit are still taxable.\u00a0 Thanks to the rule change, you may be able to get a bigger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eztaxreturn.com\/contact-and-support\/tax-terms.html#taxrebate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">refund<\/a> or at least owe less money when you file your taxes.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-how-to-claim-the-tax-break\"
