However, there are other variations of the scam.&nbsp; You may receive a robocall threatening to cancel or suspend your Social Security number.&nbsp; Other times, IRS impersonators will claim they received your tax return and need to verify some information before it can be processed.&nbsp; Any details you provide will be stolen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-easy-ways-to-spot-an-irs-scam\"><strong>Easy ways to spot an IRS scam<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-they-call-text-or-contact-you-on-social-media-first\"><strong>They call, text or contact you on social media first<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Received a text message from the IRS about an unpaid tax bill? It&#8217;s highly unlikely! The IRS is very old school.&nbsp; Generally, when you owe taxes, their first course of action is to mail a bill to your home address. That is a huge red flag that something isn&#8217;t right.&nbsp; If you receive a notice from the IRS and don\u2019t agree with their findings, you\u2019re given a chance to ask questions or appeal the amount owed.&nbsp; Your notice will even provide specific instructions for handling the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-it-s-required-that-you-pay-using-a-specific-method\"><strong>It&#8217;s required that you pay using a specific method<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you hear that you must pay using a specific method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer, just know it\u2019s a scam.\u00a0 The real IRS does not accept these methods for tax payments.\u00a0 If you used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eztaxreturn.com\/?utm_dest=site&amp;action=start_return&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_term=IRSphonescam&amp;gid=IRSphonescam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ezTaxReturn<\/a> to prepare your return and have a balance due, you can log into your account to review your payment options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-they-threaten-to-have-you-deported-arrested-or-your-license-revoked\"><strong>They threaten to have you deported, arrested or your license revoked<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scammers know people will do almost anything when they\u2019re scared.&nbsp; That&#8217;s why they threaten to have you arrested, deported or your license revoked unless you pay them right away.&nbsp; Anyone can be scammed, but fraudsters tend to target seniors and recent immigrants because they have limited access to information. Let\u2019s be clear, the IRS will not threaten you or demand immediate payment.&nbsp; If you have any questions or concerns, you can call the IRS at 800-829-1040.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-report-the-fraudulent-call\"><strong>How to report the fraudulent call <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you know for a fact that you don\u2019t owe any taxes, here are the steps you need to take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don&#8217;t entertain the caller just hang up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inform the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) about the call using their \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tigta.gov\/hotline?type=IRSScamsandFraud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting<\/a>\u201d page.&nbsp; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report the incident using the <a href=\"https:\/\/reportfraud.ftc.gov\/#\/?orgcode=IRS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FTC Complaint Assistant<\/a> and write &#8220;IRS Telephone Scam&#8221; in the comments.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Still need to do your taxes?
