Setting up automatic payments can help you avoid late fees and service interruptions.\u00a0 The drawback is that if you don\u2019t budget correctly, you may overdraft your account.\u00a0 For that reason, there are certain bills you should not put on <a aria-label=\"autopay (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electronic_bill_payment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">autopay<\/a>.\u00a0 Find out which ones can get you into trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-auto-insurance\"><strong>Auto insurance <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everyone pays their <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vehicle_insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"auto insurance (opens in a new tab)\">auto insurance<\/a> on a monthly basis.&nbsp; Instead, some drivers prefer to pay in full every six months.&nbsp; When a bill is infrequent, there\u2019s a better chance of forgetting the next due date.&nbsp; If there&#8217;s not enough money in your bank account to cover the expense, the bill won\u2019t get paid.&nbsp; Missing payments can get you dropped from your insurer and create a whole lot of headaches that you don&#8217;t need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In most states, you\u2019re required to at least have <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liability_insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"liability coverage (opens in a new tab)\">liability coverage<\/a>.&nbsp; If you\u2019re caught driving while uninsured, you may face fines, a suspended license, jail time and repossession of your vehicle.&nbsp; Plus, you\u2019ll be responsible for covering all damages out of pocket if you get into an accident.&nbsp; Having a lapse in coverage can also cause you to pay a higher insurance rate in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-utilities\"><strong>Utilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normally when you get your bills, you review the statement and write a check or make a one-time payment.&nbsp; Autopay tends to make people lazy.&nbsp; They just assume that everything is correct and go about their business.&nbsp; Since utility bills fluctuate from month to month, you may not notice a rate increase or a sign that something&#8217;s wrong because you\u2019re not paying close enough attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gym-memberships\"><strong>Gym memberships<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year people claim they\u2019re going to start hitting the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gym\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"gym (opens in a new tab)\">gym<\/a> and get into the best shape of their life.&nbsp; After a few months, they\u2019re singing a completely different tune.&nbsp; The problem is they continue paying for a service that they no longer use.&nbsp; Reports show that 80 percent of Americans who have a gym membership, don\u2019t go to the gym.&nbsp; That\u2019s an average of $58 a month they\u2019re throwing down the drain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cell-phones\"><strong>Cell phones<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To encourage customers to sign up for autopay, some cell phone companies offer a $5-$10 monthly discount on every line.\u00a0 This is great for those with unlimited talk and data plans who can afford it.\u00a0 If you\u2019re living paycheck to paycheck, this is another one of those bills you should not put on autopay.\u00a0 Since the billing dates aren\u2019t the same each month, an unexpected payment can put your account in the red.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly half of all Americans don\u2019t pay their bills on time.
