Don\u2019t let annoying airline fees ruin your travel budget, use our tips to avoid them.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-checked-bags\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Checked bags<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most airlines charge between $25 to $35 for your first checked bag and even more for a second.\u00a0 Keep in mind, the fee applies to both your departing and returning flights.\u00a0 For a family of four, that\u2019s easily an extra $200.\u00a0 Using an airline credit card can save you money because many of them waive the first checked bag fee. Companions traveling on the same reservation also receive the perk. Three cards that offer free checked bags are the <a href=\"https:\/\/creditcards.aa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Citi\/AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard (opens in a new tab)\">Citi\/AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexpress.com\/us\/credit-cards\/card\/delta-skymiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card (opens in a new tab)\">Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cards.barclaycardus.com\/banking\/cards\/jetblue-plus-card\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"JetBlue Plus Card (opens in a new tab)\">JetBlue Plus Card<\/a>. If you&#8217;d rather not apply for a new credit card, your best bet is to just pack light and squeeze everything into your carry on. Alternatively, you can fly with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southwest_Airlines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Southwest (opens in a new tab)\">Southwest<\/a> and get two checked bags free.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-overweight-luggage\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Overweight luggage<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women are notorious for overpacking.\u00a0 A report showed that 9 out of 10 ladies don\u2019t even wear all the clothes they pack for vacation.\u00a0 If your luggage exceeds the airlines weight limit (usually 50 lbs.), you\u2019ll be charged an overweight baggage fee and it\u2019s not cheap.\u00a0 Depending on the airline, you\u2019ll pay between $100 to $200 per bag, each way.\u00a0 An easy way to avoid the fee is to weigh your suitcase when you think you\u2019re done packing.\u00a0 If it\u2019s more than 50 lbs. start taking stuff out until you\u2019re in compliance.\u00a0 It may be helpful to use a packing app like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packpnt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"PackPoint (opens in a new tab)\">PackPoint<\/a> so you\u2019ll know exactly what you need instead of trying to carry your entire wardrobe.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-flight-changes-or-cancellation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flight changes or cancellation<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you\u2019re trying to travel on a budget, a dirt-cheap red eye can be very attractive.\u00a0 However, you may have second thoughts once you realize how early you\u2019d have to wake up to get to the airport.\u00a0 The good news is you have 24 hours to cancel your tickets without penalty.\u00a0 After that, you\u2019ll have to pay an expensive change fee unless it&#8217;s an emergency.\u00a0 It\u2019s not uncommon for airlines to charge $200 plus the difference in fares for domestic flights.\u00a0 You\u2019ll cough up a lot more than that for international flights.\u00a0 The best way to avoid the headache is to hold off until you\u2019re 100% sure of your plans.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-phone-reservations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Phone reservations<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unless you have extremely complicated travel plans, there\u2019s no need to book your trip over the phone. Avoid the $25 to $35 fee and do it yourself online. You can book directly through the airline or use a travel site like Kayak to find the best deals.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-printed-boarding-pass\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Printed boarding pass<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many low-cost airlines don\u2019t offer the traditional services that most travelers are used to.\u00a0 You\u2019ll pay extra for your carry-on bag, seat selection and to have your boarding pass printed.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spirit_Airlines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Spirit Airlines (opens in a new tab)\">Spirit Airlines<\/a> charges $2 per boarding pass printed at the airport kiosk and $10 if it&#8217;s printed at the check-in counter.\u00a0 The obvious solution is to print your tickets at home for free.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-seat-selection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Seat selection<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you prefer a window or aisle seat?\u00a0 Unfortunately, your opinion doesn\u2019t matter when you fly with a budget airline or book a basic economy ticket.\u00a0 Usually you aren\u2019t assigned a seat until you get to the airport and at that point, you&#8217;re given whatever is available. \u00a0If you want a specific seat, you&#8217;ll have to pay a fee. Keep in mind, certain seats cost more than others.
