things we\u2019re buying until we see the final price.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/fees-billing\/protect-yourself-from-hidden-fees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Consumer Reports (opens in a new tab)\">Consumer Reports<\/a>, at least 85 percent of Americans have faced an unexpected or hidden fee in the last two years.\u00a0 Here are some hidden fees that can blindside you.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Foreign transaction fees<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think twice about using your credit card abroad.\u00a0 In most cases you\u2019ll be charged a foreign transaction fee which is usually around 3% of your purchase.\u00a0 This consists of a 1% fee from the payment processor and another 2% from the card issuer.\u00a0 An easy way to avoid the expense is to use cash or apply for a credit card that doesn&#8217;t charge foreign transaction fees.\u00a0 A few that fit the bill are Capital One\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalone.com\/credit-cards\/ventureone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"VentureOne (opens in a new tab)\">VentureOne<\/a> Rewards credit card, Bank of America\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofamerica.com\/credit-cards\/products\/travel-rewards-credit-card\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Travel Rewards (opens in a new tab)\">Travel Rewards<\/a> credit card and Chase\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/creditcards.chase.com\/rewards-credit-cards\/chase-sapphire-preferred\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Sapphire Preferred (opens in a new tab)\">Sapphire Preferred<\/a> card.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Resort fees<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next time you book a hotel pay special attention to the fine print.\u00a0 Some hotels charge resort fees to cover amenities such as Wi-Fi, gym access, pool use and the in-room safe.\u00a0 The fee is usually unadvertised and added on to your nightly room rate.\u00a0 In 2018, the average resort fee was $27 per day.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Balance transfer fees<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When researching tips for getting out of debt quickly it\u2019s not uncommon for balance transfers to be recommended.\u00a0 Experts love it because you can save money by transferring your credit card balance to a card with a lower interest rate.\u00a0 What you may not realize is that there\u2019s a fee attached.\u00a0 The balance transfer fee is normally 3%-5% of the transferred amount.\u00a0 However, you can avoid the expense by applying for the right credit card.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/creditcards.chase.com\/balance-transfer-credit-cards\/chase-slate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Chase Slate (opens in a new tab)\">Chase Slate<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexpress.com\/us\/credit-cards\/card\/amex-everyday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Amex EveryDay (opens in a new tab)\">Amex EveryDay<\/a> card and the SunTrust <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suntrust.com\/credit-cards\/prime-rewards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Prime Rewards (opens in a new tab)\">Prime Rewards<\/a> credit card are a few that don\u2019t charge balance transfer fees.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Departure tax<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody goes on vacation expecting not to spend any money.\u00a0 Most travelers set aside cash for food, transportation, excursions and souvenirs.\u00a0 However, there\u2019s one hidden fee that can catch you off guard if you don\u2019t do your research beforehand.\u00a0 Depending on the destination, you may be charged a departure tax.\u00a0 While some countries include the fee in your ticket price, others expect you to have your cash payment ready at the airport.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Paper statement fees<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still receiving paper statements in the mail?\u00a0 If so, you\u2019re wasting money.\u00a0 Many banks now charge a fee of $2-$3 per monthly statement.\u00a0 The best way to avoid the expense is to sign up for electronic statements.\u00a0 If you want a hard copy you can always print it yourself at home.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Award redemption fees<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some credit cards offer reward points or miles which can later be redeemed for gift cards, hotels or flights.\u00a0 It sounds like a sweet deal, but you may be left with a sour taste in your mouth when you\u2019re hit with a award redemption fee. \u00a0This usually occurs when trying to redeem airline miles over the phone or at a ticketing counter.\u00a0 A few airlines also charge a close-in booking fee if you book your ticket within 21 days of departure.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Excess activity fee<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excess activity is when you have too many withdrawals, transfers and payments from your savings account.\u00a0 Federal regulation states that you can only have 6 transfers and certain types of withdrawals per statement cycle.\u00a0 If you go over the limit, you\u2019ll be charged a fee for each transaction.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">File your taxes fast and ez in 30 minutes or
