{"id":15419,"date":"2018-06-28T16:56:14","date_gmt":"2018-06-28T20:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.eztaxreturn.com\/?p=15419"},"modified":"2023-06-06T12:21:43","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T17:21:43","slug":"foods-you-can-still-eat-past-the-expiration-date","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.eztaxreturn.com\/blog\/foods-you-can-still-eat-past-the-expiration-date\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Foods You Can Still Eat Past the Expiration Date"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whether you\u2019re preparing for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apocalypse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apocalypse<\/a> or taking advantage of a good deal, you don\u2019t want your stockpile to spoil before you get a chance to use it. \u00a0Despite what the label says, most foods are safe to consume long past the printed date.\u00a0 Typically, the &#8220;best if used by&#8221; date refers to the foods quality not its safety.\u00a0 So it may taste a little different but you can still eat it as long as it&#8217;s been stored properly.\u00a0 With that being said, here are some foods you can eat past the expiration date.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h2><strong>Rice<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p>Under normal conditions, raw white rice can last in your pantry 4-5 years past the expiration date.\u00a0 However, you can bump that number up to 30 years by storing your rice in an oxygen-free container at 40\u00b0F or below.\u00a0 Just keep an eye out for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rice_weevil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rice weevils<\/a> which can destroy your food.\u00a0 White rice is the only kind of rice with a long-shelf life.\u00a0 Brown and wild rice can only last 6-8 months past its printed date.\u00a0 You\u2019ll know when your brown rice has gone bad because it will have a rotten smell.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h2><strong>Dried beans<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p>When stored in a cool, dark place (under 75\u00b0F), dried beans have an indefinite shelf life.\u00a0 The only drawback is that they\u2019ll lose their moisture over time.\u00a0 So, after about a year, you may need to soak or cook them for a longer period.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll be able to tell when your beans are rotten because they&#8217;ll be surrounded by a white liquid and smell sour when you cook them.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h2><strong>Alcohol<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p>Even if you don\u2019t consider yourself a drinker, it still makes sense to keep a bottle of booze handy.\u00a0 If an emergency strikes and you need to go into survival mode, it can serve multiple purposes.\u00a0 For instance, it can be used as a disinfectant, deodorant, fire starter, anesthetic for tooth pain, etc.\u00a0 Base liquors like vodka, tequila, rum, gin, whiskey and brandy can last forever.\u00a0 But cream liqueurs like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baileys_Irish_Cream\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bailey\u2019s<\/a> must be thrown out after 18 months.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h2><strong>Dried fruit<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p>Most unopened packages of dried fruit can survive in your pantry a year past the expiration date.\u00a0 However, they can last forever if you store them in the freezer instead.\u00a0 You just need to make sure it\u2019s sealed airtight.\u00a0 Signs your dried fruits have gone bad include discoloration and loss of flavor.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h2><strong>Instant coffee<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p>Some people act like they can\u2019t survive without a cup of Joe.\u00a0 The good news is the instant coffee in your kitchen may outlast you.\u00a0 The shelf life is anywhere between 2 to 20 years in your pantry, indefinitely in the freezer.\u00a0 To determine if your coffee is still good, just take a whiff.\u00a0 If it still has its delicious aroma, the flavor will still be there.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 id=\"h-tax-filing-made-fast-and-ez-no-tax-knowledge-needed\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Tax filing made fast and ez.
